A recent example is the concomitant development and commercialization of theranostics radiopharmaceutical pairs for the treatment of gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors:


68Ga-dotatate is a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent used for the diagnostic of gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

It is formed of 68Ga, an isotope of Gallium emitting gamma radiations for use in PET-CT scanning and octreotide, a peptide specifically targeting type 2-somatostatin receptors that are overexpressed in gastro-enter-pancreatic neuroendocrine cancers.

At the same time, a therapeutic pair to treat gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors was developed to form 177Lu-dotatate by only substituting 68Ga by 177Lu (an isotope of Lutetium emitting beta radiations for cancer therapy), but keeping the same peptide, octreotide.
